The purpose of a laptop program “is to create a
Connected Learning Community, a world where
learning isn't limited by the hours of a school
day, the walls of a classroom, or the resources
of a community. And, in this world, learning does not
result from access alone but from continuous
dynamic interaction among students, educators,
parents and the extended community.” Microsoft
has dubbed this initiative, “Anytime Anywhere
Learning.
The wireless network enables everyone on
campus to access all network hardware,
software and the World Wide Web from any
location. Having a wireless network is a
definite advantage because it facilitates
network access and therefore increases the
usefulness of the laptops. In addition, it
improves school safety since students and
teachers are prone to tripping over wires or
cables.
Laptops allow students with a wide variety
of educational needs and learning styles to
be successful. According to Microsoft, “…new
research findings reveal that students with
full-time access to laptop computers perform
better in school. A recent study entitled
"Powerful Tools for Schooling" found that
students with laptops demonstrate more
critical and creative thinking, produce
higher quality work and are more motivated
and interested in core academic subjects.”
The positive, supportive climate at Sage
Ridge School encourages both students and
teachers to experiment with the new
technology. While many schools are mired in
tradition, SRS is an institution whose
administrators and teachers are not afraid
to forge new ground. This flexible attitude
has made it possible to operate on the
“cutting edge” of school technology.
