- Head's Note
Today we will have our Gather event on campus - coming together with Grandparents and Grandfriends in the morning and meeting together in the afternoon to honor our veterans. Events connecting our students with ‘grands’ and veterans is firmly part of our school tradition since its inception. It has been observed that, “Grandchildren are a grandparent's link to the future. Grandparents are the child's link to the past.” Our event has purpose in raising awareness for our students on the importance of the past and that it has personal relevance through their own families’ histories.
Today is about expressing gratitude. Gratitude for the service of our elders, from the care and love they extend to grandchildren, to the freedom veterans preserved for us. I hope today connects us to a collective past that manifests in a joyful present and models for all our students the importance of contributing to a future of service to the community. After all, it is all of us collectively that model the values and support for our children to succeed - whether we are near or far. I love how Joyce Allston has expressed it, “Grandparents, like heroes, are as necessary to a child's growth as vitamins.” So connect, share, remember, and show gratitude. We grow in the process.
I also hope you have been reading the Teenage Brain and look forward to seeing many of you next Wednesday, 13 November, at 8am in the Loft. Please come whether you have finished the book or not - our discussion will be inclusive and consider how we can apply what we learn from Dr Jensen’s research.
