Heroes Among Us [Athletics Update]
Patrick Casey

Greetings Scorpion Nation!

Why does it hurt when we lose our heroes? I was in line at a local coffee shop recently, and I heard someone comment about the recent passing of LA Lakers icon, Kobe Bryant and eight others in a tragic helicopter crash in Calabasas, CA.  The individual said something very interesting, "Why is everyone so upset, it's not like they knew him personally?"  I didn't consider it to be an insensitive remark.  Many people experience grief when they hear about the passing of a person who is well known, and many others feel nothing.  Everyone feels differently, and that's fine.

I believe those of us that feel a saddened sense of loss when we hear about the passing of an athlete, or musician, or poet, or political figure is because they made us feel something.  We had a connection to them, and now they're gone.  Athletes dedicate their lives to perfecting their performance.  They participate in a reality that most people can only do in their imaginations.  They refuse to quit, even in the most challenging of circumstances.  It is that particular mindset that sets them apart.  A mindset that ALL heroes share.  I believe it hurts the most when we lose iconic individuals that are heroes beyond their profession.  An athlete, or musician, or poet, or political figure that has the capacity for kindness, respect, and generosity.  In my opinion, those are heroic characteristics that should be valued.  So, Scorpion Nation, take a look around our own community...there are heroes among us.

Let's hear it for our MS Girls Volleyball Teams!!  Going 2-0 this week against Lake Tahoe School and Whittell MS!  The 7th grade team took Lake Tahoe to 3 games this past Tuesday, clinching the W in the tie-breaker by 2 points!  On Wednesday, the 7th grade Lady Scorpions hammered Whittell with an onslaught of cannon-fire serves by Majken Burtt, Ava Wohletz, Jennifer Sarkissian, and Natalie Burke capturing a 25-7, 25-19 victory over the Lady Warriors!  The 8th grade team made short work of the Lady Bobcats up at Incline, cruising to a quick 2 game sweep.  After losing to Whittell earlier in the season, our Lady Scorpions were looking for some good old fashioned payback this past Wednesday!  And they collected!!  Whittell took the first game by 4 points, Sage Ridge answered in the 2nd with a 25-16 win.  Down 7-10 in the tie-breaker, Mckenzie Garrett stepped up to the line and served 6 straight points to put the Lady Scorpions ahead!  Sophia Soran fired a pin-point accurate serve to finish off the 3rd game and give Sage Ridge the overall victory!  Well done, MS Lady Scorpion Volleyball!!

Two games this week for our Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball teams!  Sage Ridge hosted Sierra Lutheran at Home this past Saturday in front of a standing room only crowd!  The girls played a tough game against the Lady Falcons.  Siena Hall, Sam Kenyherz, and Josefine Clausen each had 6 points!  Final score SRS 20, SLHS 40.  The boys team followed up with a very exciting neck-and-neck game with the Falcons.  It was a very hard-played, aggressive game.  6 total players fouled out between both teams!  Stakes are high in the 1A this year!  In the end, the Falcons prevailed 43-36.

Our Scorpion Ballers traveled up to South Shore this past Tuesday to play League rivals Whittell HS.  After coming up short on Saturday, our boys team knew how much was riding on this particular game.  I'll take you to the last 0.25 seconds: Scorpions 54, Warriors 52.  Time out, Whittell.  Clock starts.  Buzzer sounds.  SCORPIONS WIN 58-52!  Congratulations Coach Brian, Coach Johne, and the entire team for defeating Whittell varsity basketball for the first time!  Good Luck tonight to our Girls and Boys Basketball teams as they take on Pyramid Lake!

Heads up!  Spring Athletics are right around the corner!  Looking forward to MS Girls Soccer, MS Boys and Girls Track, US Boys Golf, US Boys/Girls Swimming, and US Boys/Girls Track!

Have a great weekend!  GO SCORPIONS!!
