Home Stretch and the Way Forward

Home Stretch and the Way Forward
Tobin Bechtel

Scorpion School is coming down to the home stretch!  We all must do our best to keep our students engaged until the end and promote a smooth transition into what will likely be an unusual summer.  While I cannot predict exactly what our fall school year will look like, we know that schools will need to continue to have a distance learning capability. While we have pivoted and launched distance learning quickly in response to COVID, we know we can continue to evolve our program and need to consider how it supports our in-school learning.

We need your perspective and are partnering with the National Association of Independent Schools to help us understand your family’s experience right now. This NAIS anonymous short survey will only take about 5 minutes to complete. Your responses will help us improve the way we deliver programming and communicate with our community as well as help us gauge how we compare with other schools on the national level.

Next year, Challenge Success will work with our school to design action plans to implement best practices in areas such as assessment, homework, and a healthy school climate designed uniquely for SRS. I announced at the Parents Association meeting in May that Sage Ridge will be a Challenge Success school for the 2020-2021 school year. Challenge Success is a nonprofit developed out of Stanford University to partner with schools, families, and communities to embrace a broad definition of success and to implement research-based strategies that promote student well-being and engagement with learning.

Working with Challenge Success provides Sage Ridge with access to best practices, research, and experts around teaching and learning.  We are excited to be bringing them in next week for a virtual session. Every member of our community may attend and if you know other families that would be interested in joining us please share the link(s) below with them.

Our first session with Challenge Success will be on Navigating Remote Learning to explore practical tips and guidelines for what families can do to best support student well-being and engagement with learning. Come with your questions to ask these knowledgeable resources as we navigate the next stage of our distance learning together as an entire community. There will be Q&A at the end of each webinar, plus recommendations for approaching a summer, unlike what we have experienced before.

I will be on both sessions as a panelist, and our staculty will also attend as we embark on our journey with Challenge Success.  If you have students in both sessions, you are welcome to join both. Some of the content will be similar. Please register for the appropriate grade level session below.

We are diligently planning for the reopening of school in the fall. Once these plans are more finalized, I will share these details with our entire community. We are continually grateful for the ongoing support you have given Scorpion School and we will be using our experience and your input to make our reopening strong and safe. I believe that Sage Ridge will be the best learning experience a student can have in all of Northern Nevada.
