Tobin Bechtel & Dr. Tracy Hardister

As children’s social lives with their peers grow and develop, parents at times feel uncertain about how to support their children through the inevitable ups and downs of peer relationships, friendships, social alliances, and social cruelty.  A parent’s sense of perceived helplessness regarding their children’s social world often leads to misguided, but well-intentioned, attempts to problem solve and interfere in their children’s peer relationships and friendships.  The SRS Parent Association, in collaboration with the SRS leadership team, invites you to engage in our parent education series dedicated to supporting our children as they navigate the complexities of 21st century social interactions and age-appropriate friendships.

The parent education series will kick off on December 15th and 16th with the book club discussion led by Tobin Bechtel, Head of School, and Tracy Hardister, School Counselor.  The chosen book, Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children, by Michael Thompson, Ph.D., offers insight into children’s and adolescent’s developing social world, as well as how parents can support their children in their social development.

Upon return from winter break, the parent education series will continue with a showing of Screenagers Next Chapter: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience and a parent presentation and discussion regarding online safety and cyberbullying awareness. In the spring we will wrap up this series with a book club opportunity focused on fostering resilience in our children and adolescents.
