Scorpion Rhys Ferrito ‘28 has done it again. The Sage Ridge student won the 2024 USA Triathlon Youth and Junior National Championships on Saturday, July 13 at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines, Iowa. Ferrito won the USA National Triathlon Youth Champion title for the second consecutive year. He has competed in the national event four times.
The 14-year-old freshman raced in the 13-15 age group in brutal heat and humidity but kept to his race plan—starting relatively conservative on the 375-meter swim, attacking hard for the lead on the 10-kilometer bike portion, and controlling any counterattack in the 2.5-kilometer run to the finish line.
The race plan worked. Ferrito was fourth out of the water, but after a mile on the bike, he took the lead and managed to increase his lead in the dash to the finish line, winning his age group by about 45 seconds.
It takes a team of dedicated coaches to help Ferrito achieve his dream. Ferrito’s dad, Robbie, thanks his son’s local coaches and trainers. Two of Ferrito’s coaches are also Sage Ridge School Varsity Coaches. Lupe Cabada coaches Sage Ridge’s Varsity Cross Country and Varsity Track & Field teams, and Sharon Weiss has coached Varsity Swim at Sage Ridge for many years.
“They are the best in Northern Nevada,” Robbie Ferrito said about Cabada and Weiss.
Ferrito has trained with Cabada for nearly four years and Weiss for almost five years. He also trains with Max McManus—an accomplished triathlete—of MaxResults Reno on strength and conditioning. Dad Robbie manages and coordinates Ferrito’s training and trains him in cycling.
Earlier this year, Ferrito won the 2024 Oregon State Triathlon Championship for Boys 14-15 & High School State Champion and the 2024 California State Triathlon for Boys 14 & Under.
Congratulations to Scorpion Rhys Ferrito on displaying commitment and courage in his triathlon pursuits! We look forward to his Sage Ridge Varsity Cross Country season this fall. Go Scorpions!
