Congratulations to Sage Ridge School’s Rhea Skaria ‘25 on receiving the Harvard Prize Book Award from The Harvard Club of Northern Nevada and the Sierra. Skaria was honored at a ceremony on May 4, 2024, at the Sage Ridge School E.L. Wiegand Student Activity Center alongside a small selection of outstanding high school juniors from across Northern Nevada & the Sierra Region of California. In addition to the recognition, Skaria received the book “Making the Most of College” by Richard J. Light and a $500 scholarship.
Criteria for recommendation and application for The Harvard Prize Book Award include excellence in scholarship—with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.75 and a minimum of six honors and/or AP classes—and character, combined with a “variety of achievements.” Skaria’s application included a personal essay and a recommendation letter from Sage Ridge History Teacher Ms. Stephanie Deveza-Porter.
Ms. Deveza-Porter's recommendation letter detailed Skaria’s “intrinsic motivation to learn, her abilities as a leader, and her passions both in and out of the classroom, along with her compassion for the community.”
President of The Harvard Club of Northern Nevada and the Sierra Jeannie Reeth introduced Skaria and her academic, extracurricular and volunteer accomplishments.
“Rhea is an outstanding student at Sage Ridge School with a 4.4. cumulative GPA and a challenging course load of AP classes. And she has already received a 5 on the AP World History exam,” Reeth said, adding that a 5 on an AP World History exam is rare because it is “just so comprehensive.”
Reeth continued: “Rhea is also a member of the National Honor Society, and she won the Pillar of Scholarship Award and the Excellence in Human Anatomy Award from her school.”
Some of Rhea’s achievements Reeth shared at the ceremony include:
- Team manager of Sage Ridge’s award-winning and state-qualifying Mock Trial teams 2022-2024.
- Sage Ridge Theatre Productions Stage Manager and volunteer
- Many theatre awards and honors for stage management, including placing in the top 10% in Nevada for stage management at the Nevada Thespians Festival and “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” selection for the State Mainstage Showcase in Las Vegas this year.
- Awards for Excellence in Media Arts and Outstanding Visual Arts and an Honorable Mention from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
- Rhea has pursued her interest in healthcare with a job shadow at Summit Pediatrics and she was selected to serve as a delegate to represent Sage Ridge School at the Congress of Future Medical Leaders (with twin Michael Skaria ‘25) where she will receive the Award of Excellence this summer in Boston.
- Rhea enjoys playing the piano and swimming. She played basketball through ninth grade.
- Rhea is active with her church, participating in youth group and she has done a lot of charity work both through her church and volunteering with Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse, National Charity League, Nevada Junior Classical League, Knots of Love, Eddy House, and the National Organization for Women.
Thank you to Reeth and Harvard Prize Book Committee Chair Leslie Hsu Oh for the reception and for celebrating Scorpion Rhea Skaria’s courageous commitment to scholarship, integrity and community. Congratulations, Rhea!
