Sandhu '25, Sekhon '28 & Zhang '26 Lead Top Debaters; Sage Ridge Debate Team Wins 2025 District Championship
John Sloyan

The SRS debate team concluded the regular season in historic fashion. In our last four tournaments, 24 brave debaters competed in locations such as Reno High School, North Valleys, and Elko, and while numerous individual competitors have excelled, it was our overall team effort that earned us the 2025 Sagebrush League Small Schools 1st Place Bowl. Great work, everyone!

Here are some highlights from recent events:

Lincoln Douglas: Sandhu Wins Senior LD; Sharma, Prevedouros 3rd in Novice LD

Nanki Sandhu with debate trophy from her senior season.

Nanki Sandhu ‘25 was a dominant force in Lincoln-Douglas debate this year. Highlighting her season was a decisive tournament win at Reno High. One winning ballot in the final round stated: “Excellent rebuttal and professional demeanor.” Nanki will build on her experience as a debater as she plans on joining debate at University of California San Diego in the fall. We will miss you next year, Nanki! Great work!

Jade Sharma 2024-2025 Debate Season

Jade Sharma ‘27 had been flirting with breaking into finals for much of the year, and accomplished that feat at Elko High. According to one of her ballots, her “impressive delivery” and “clear grasp of the topic” led her to a strong 3rd place finish. Jade is one of our most improved debaters this year. Keep up the good work!

After dabbling in Public Forum and Congressional Debate, Endie Prevedouros ‘26 found his voice in Lincoln Douglas this year, and put together strong competitive performances. At Reno High, Endie finished in second place due to his “outstanding delivery” and “well constructed case,” according to his judges. It was great to see Endie’s natural talents and hard work earn him this success. Well done!

Public Forum: Sekhon Wins Top Speaker; Sekhon & Sloyan 3rd Place in Senior PF

Justin Sloyan and Milin Sekhon 2024-2025 Speech & Debate season

In any high school competition, seniors have a huge advantage over freshmen, and the odds of winning are clearly in their favor. But at the Reno High tournament, 9th graders Milin Sekhon ‘28 and Justin Sloyan ‘28 broke into finals in the Senior division and came away with a third place finish. One judge remarked on their confidence against an older team: “You stood your ground effectively during grand crossfire.” Great job!

Big Questions: Zhang Runner-Up; Kennedy 3rd in Senior BQ

Andrew Zhang 2024-2025 Speech & Debate Season

Led by assistant coach and SRS history teacher Robert Adler, our BQ team made serious waves in the Sagebrush league this year. Andrew Zhang ‘26 came out of nowhere this spring to make it all the way to the finals at Spanish Springs, where he lost a very close final round. Wes Kennedy ‘27 continued his strong BQ career with a third place finish at Spanish Springs. These two will be a force in BQ in upcoming seasons. Well done!

Team Awards: Cotton & Jennings Win High Point Award; Six Debaters Join 100 Point Club

Annually, SRS Debate recognizes its highest NSDA point leaders. This year, the team was led by Mallory Cotton ‘27 and Carlee Jennings ‘27. Your contribution this year made all the difference, and you will be leaders of the team next year. Well done!

Earning NSDA Points is challenging. It requires dedication to attend tournaments regularly, and it takes skill to win rounds. It is quite an accomplishment to earn 100 points or more in a season, as the following students have this year: Mallory Cotton (120), Carlee Jennings (115)Milin Sekhon (114), Justin Sloyan (114), Nanki Sandhu (109), Raghav Bhalla (105) and Wes Kennedy. They become official members of the “100 Point Club” for 2025. Congratulations!
