SAGE RIDGE SCHOOL SENIOR SIGNS NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT FOR CAL POLY DIVISION I SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAM
RENO, Nev. – Sage Ridge School is proud to announce that Senior Alex Power signed his National Letter of Intent committing to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo’s Division I Swimming and Diving Team on Wednesday, November 10, 2021.
Early September 2021, Alex Power was named to the USA Swimming 2020-2021 Scholastic All-America Team for the second year in a row. According to USA Swimming, "The honor is given to 9-12th grade students who maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average and have swum an individual pool time equal to or faster than the 2020 Winter Junior qualifying time in an individual event from August 2020 - August 2021.”
Alex swims year-round for the Lakeridge Swim team as well as the Sage Ridge School high school team. Alex averages approximately 40,000 yards a week swimming which is just short of swimming the width of Lake Tahoe, twice every week. Some notable highlights from his swim career include 2:04.53 / 58.08 200/100 Breaststroke Short Course Yards and a 2:25.53 / 1:06.36 200/100 Breaststroke Long Course Meters.
“2020 ravaged sports careers. Alex was out of the pool for several months, and it was challenging coming back,” said Sharon Weiss, Alex’s swim coach. “Alex is a real testament to patience, maturity, and his willingness to put it all on the line. I could not be more proud and excited for him.”
In late September 2021, Alex received a Letter of Commendation in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. More than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise and some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. Alex has made the Head of School’s List every semester since Grade 5 and was also awarded the College Boards AP Scholar with Distinction award.
“I am thrilled and honored to be swimming at Cal Poly. It is a great academic university with an incredible swim program — I cannot wait to be part of the Mustang swim team in the fall,” remarked Alex. “Thank you to Lakeridge and Sage Ridge for all of your support over the years. I especially want to thank my friends, family, coaches, and teachers for helping me get to this point. It was your support that helped me get here.”
“Alex Power’s ongoing commitment to academics and athletics throughout his time here at Sage Ridge exemplifies our school’s mission and our hope that our students will excel not only in academics, but in various areas of their life and explore what they are truly passionate about,” said Head of School, Tobin Bechtel.
Sage Ridge School is very proud of Alex and looks forward to following his ongoing achievements both in and out of the swimming pool at Cal Poly and beyond.
