Student Advice on Utilizing Free Time
Jess Thibault

Even with a full, online school schedule and zoom lessons our students have more free time than usual right now.

Without extracurriculars, commutes, and a slower pacing of each day Sage Ridge students - like most students across the country - have time to explore new interests and communicate with friends in new ways.

We asked students about what they are doing with their free time and what they suggest others do to stay active and this is what they said.

"Right now I'm doing everything possible to be creative and expand my hobbies!

"My advice is to keep yourself working on projects, or try new ones. It can be something as simple as trying to cook a new dish, or writing poetry instead of short stories! If you keep yourself busy, it can help calm or distract you from everything going on in the world right now. And don't stop trying. Ever."

"I am doing a sketch of Thanos, and I am teaching myself "Havana" by Camilla Cabello on the piano (both with the help of Youtube). I do some gaming with some close friends who live out of state, since they are in the same boat as us. I have also been baking different things! I made bread pudding, banana bread, and pumpkin bread. I go on walks more frequently, especially with my dogs. It gives me a lot of time to relax and reflect.

"If you are having trouble figuring out what to do with your free time, I recommend pursuing a hobby that you never really got the time for. But if you really want to be productive and get work done, either help out with chores around the house or see if there is anything you can get ahead on for school.

"As we are in the 4th, almost 5th week of distance learning, a lot of people (as well as myself) have lost the motivation to keep on top of their work for distance learning. Try to switch things up a bit! I personally got tired of working at my desk in my room, so I have relocated to the dining table for a change of environment."

- Rhea Skaria ('25)

"During these times, we need each other more than ever. Use your free time to call a friend and check in; do a video chat with your friend group; but do something to continue to keep your friends close by.

"That being said, we are all stuck with the people who can help us most to get through this: our families. Take time to cook together, eat meals together, play games together, work out together, watch TV together, whatever it may be. Having so much 'family time' may not be such a bad thing! Use your free time to get to know each other better and do things you normally couldn't do during the school year."

"On my free time, I am exercising a lot, baking, writing a song, watching movies/shows and YouTube, painting my nails, having spa days, practicing gymnastics skills, doing new hairstyles, learning new songs on the piano, organizing and cleaning my room, singing, playing with my pets, DIY-ing things, and many other activities!"

- Milana Gangloff ('27)
