Sage Ridge School eighth grader Vera van der Linden ('26) represents Nevada as a State Merit Winner in the 2021 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

The competition asks students in grades 5-8 to identify an everyday problem in their community or the world and submit a one- to two-minute video explaining the science behind their solution.

Vera said her prototype and video were inspired after learning about energy conservation in class. In her contest entry, she proposes using wasted wind energy from air conditioning units to charge mobile devices, such as smartphones.

"I am thrilled with this award and feel that this win has confirmed my interest in pursuing a career in STEM," she said.
