Rhys Ferrito ('28), competed in the 2023 California State Championship Triathlon in Mission Viejo, California. He earned the championship title for the "14 & Under" age-group!
Every year, all 50 US states host championship competitions and do not require participants to be residents of that particular state. The California State Championship is the largest and most prestigious.
Not only did Rhys earn his title out of his age group, but he also finished 13th overall out of about 150 racers--mostly adults.
This was also his longest race effort ever, as it took him 1 hour, 14 minutes and 17 seconds to cross the finish line.
Rhys' father and coach, Robbie Ferrito, says "At the awards ceremony people were quite amazed that a teenager could do that, and that's when I had to clarify he's not even a teenager yet, as he's still 12 yrs old."
Next up will be Rhys' first international race in Wisconsin on June 4th. Keep up with his racing accomplishments on Instagram at @thetrirhys. Good luck, Rhys!
