Physical Education Department

The department provides students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to pursue healthy lifestyles.

The Sage Ridge School Physical Education Department meets and exceeds standards set by the National Standards for Physical Education, which is endorsed by the Society for Health and Physical Educators. The department provides students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to pursue healthy lifestyles. The department provides a variety of sports and activities that help students work on athletic and social skills. Boys and girls physical education classes are venues through which students sharpen their sportsmanship, teamwork, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. They learn how to be responsible and strategic; they lead and follow.

Our physical education teachers are dedicated to sharing their life-long pursuit of physical health with their students. The teachers offer lessons on both sports and health and wellness.

Students in Grades 3-8 participate in physical education on a daily basis. Daily physical activity is crucial for Middle School students. Because of their participation in our physical education classes, students are often introduced to sports they would never otherwise play. It is not uncommon for students to participate in a sports unit in physical education and then join a school or Reno, Nevada community team in that sport. In class, they not only play different sports, but they also learn by watching videos, visiting with guest speakers, participating in class discussions, taking notes, completing self and peer evaluations, reading articles, and doing peer teaching. Our physical education teachers are dedicated to sharing their life-long pursuit of physical health with their students. The teachers offer lessons on both sports and health and wellness. Both boys and girls learn to play badminton soccer, flag football, volleyball, and track and field. The girls participate in cricket, archery, and modern dance units.  Additionally, teachers instruct students in health and wellness topics such as hygiene, nutrition, fitness training, goal setting, self-esteem, and social development.

What we do in physical education is unique; it is not a typical physical education class offered at most schools. Boys and girls attend separate classes; the girls have a female teacher and the boys have a male teacher. The physical education classes meet every day and the class size is small, which allows for personalized attention from the teachers and enough equipment for every student so no one stands waiting for a turn at an activity -- our students participate during the entire class period. Additionally, the physical education classes are a safe environment in which students learn from their teachers and from each other. By participating in Sage Ridge School’s physical education classes, students have an increased knowledge of how to maintain health and wellness in their lives after Middle Schools.
