Athletics Update January 17th, 2020
Patrick Casey

Greeting Scorpion Sports Fans!

Quick question before we read about more Sage Ridge athletic accomplishments: Parents, when you were younger, what person made the biggest difference in your life?

I have found that the answer to that question is invariably someone who mentored, taught, inspired, advised, supported, affirmed, or simply cared. To me and to many others, that person was a coach. The coaches I remember the most...Coach Brooks, Coach Adams, Coach Larios...had many coaching traits in common, but they all three shared one significant characteristic: they loved their teams.  Knowing I had that commitment and care from my coaches inspired me to give the same back to my teammates, without expecting anything in return. That type of love is the greatest leadership principle on the planet! And you can't fake it. If you don't have it, you can't share it. People ask me, "how do you have successful athletic programs when you don't have facilities." Simple, we have coaches who love their teams. If you have that, winning comes easy.

Let's hear it for our MS Girls Volleyball Teams!  Our 7th and 8th grade teams took on our Southern rivals, the Doral Dragons this past Wednesday at home!  The 7th grade team started out the afternoon with 2 very exciting sets against the Lady Dragons, inevitably leading to a Sage Ridge victory!  Sofia Jaferian served 9 consecutive points in the first game and 3 consecutive serves the second game to close out the win!  Our 8th grade Lady Scorpions team were firing on all cylinders the following game!  Bump, set, BOOM!!  Wendy Cook - 3 kills, Mckenzie Garrrett - 3 kills, Anjali Gosal - 2 kills!  Not to mention another lesson in serving by Sophia Soran - 12 points total!  Lady Scorpions 25-15, 25-13!

A Varsity Boys Basketball school record was shattered this past Wednesday night!  Spencer Uppal dropped TEN 3-point shots at the Sage Ridge vs Smith Valley boys basketball game.  Spencer went on to lead Sage Ridge to a 64-52 victory overall Smith Valley with 32 total points!  Oh, and he missed the State record by ONE basket.  Great job, Uppal and the entire Scorpion Boys Basketball team!  The team is now 2-0 in League play with victories over Pyramid Lake (28 total points by Spencer Abts!) and Smith Valley.  Our Girls Basketball team continues to fight on and look forward to their game this Saturday with rivals Excel Christian!  GO SCORPION BALLERS!

Come out to Neil Road Rec Center this Saturday to cheer on your Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball Teams!  Girls game starts at 1:30pm, Boys starts at 3:00pm!

Have a great weekend and GO SCORPIONS!
