School Events Parent Education Workshop: Understanding Adolescent Self-Esteem
-
E.L. Wiegand Student Activity Center, Clemetson Lounge

Adolescence is a critical time for shaping a healthy sense of self. Self-esteem plays a powerful role in students’ academic success, relationships, emotional well-being, and ability to manage stress and anxiety. In this parent workshop, we’ll explore what self-esteem truly is (and isn’t), how it develops during the teenage years, and why both low and unstable high self-esteem can create challenges. Parents will leave with practical, research-based strategies to support confidence, resilience, and long-term well-being in everyday interactions with their child. Our workshop facilitator is Sharon Weiss, PhD. Dr. Weiss brings a rare blend of athletic leadership, academic expertise, and deep insight into human development. A lifelong swimmer and student-athlete at the University of Arizona, she earned degrees in Psychology and Sociology, followed by a Master’s in Psychology from Pepperdine University and a doctorate in Counseling and Educational Psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno, with an emphasis on Human Growth and Development. Dr. Weiss has served as Head Coach of the Lakeridge Swim Team since 1990. From 2001–2015, she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology, sociology, and counseling at UNR and TMCC. With over three decades of coaching, teaching, parenting, and studying human behavior, Dr. Weiss offers a thoughtful, compassionate, and practical perspective on the challenges and growth of children and adolescents. Participants may email questions for the speaker prior to the event to hpower@sageridge.org. This event is free and open to the public, so bring a friend.
