Academic Excellence, Applied: How Sage Sessions Bring Learning to Life
Sage Ridge School
SS Science in Action

At Sage Ridge School, academic excellence is the foundation of everything we do.

Throughout the school year, students engage in a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum across mathematics, science, English, history, world languages, and the arts. They learn to think critically, write effectively, solve complex problems, and communicate with confidence. These disciplines form the backbone of a Sage Ridge education and prepare students not only for college, but for lives of curiosity, purpose, and impact.

Yet learning doesn't only happen at a desk.

Each spring, Sage Ridge shifts gears for one of the school's most distinctive traditions: Sage Session. During the final two weeks of the academic year, students move beyond the boundaries of traditional classrooms and immerse themselves in faculty-designed experiences that emphasize creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and real-world application.

Far from replacing academics, Sage Session builds upon them. For Lower School students, the transition is intentional

Grade 1-5 students continue their core studies in mathematics and English for half of each day while spending the other half exploring hands-on Sage Session electives. This balance allows younger learners to maintain academic momentum while discovering new interests through project-based learning.

The 2026 Lower School offerings demonstrate the breadth of those opportunities.

Sage Session Food
  • In Physics of Flight, students explore the mathematics and science behind aviation, designing and building gliders while learning about forces, scale drawings, prototyping, and engineering principles.
  • In Birds of Northern Nevada, students become citizen scientists, studying local ecosystems, identifying bird species, analyzing habitats, and proposing solutions to support wildlife on campus.
  • Students in Audiobook Production combine theater, technology, and storytelling as they collaborate to record and edit an original audiobook, developing public speaking, performance, and digital media skills along the way.
  • Other students will cultivate environmental stewardship through the Pollinator Garden & Greenhouse, design solutions in Build It! Engineering Lab, conduct experiments in Discover, Test, Explore: Science in Action, or use creativity to strengthen school culture through The Sage Ridge Design Studio: Art for Impact.

For Middle School and Upper School students, Sage Session becomes even more immersive

Grade 6-12 students spend their entire school day in interdisciplinary courses that encourage them to pursue passions, tackle challenges, and engage deeply with topics that may not fit neatly into a traditional academic schedule.

Middle School and Upper School Sage Session courses include:

SSrollercoaster
  • In Democracy in Action, students toured the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City to learn how state government operates.
  • In Film Production, students collaborated to plan, shoot, and edit original short films using professional techniques.
  • In Food and Culture, students prepared and served international dishes in the Wiegand Center kitchen while exploring global traditions.
  • In Game Night, students designed and tested strategy-based games that highlight logic, teamwork, and creative problem-solving.
  • In Power Surge: Energy Unleashed, students connected physics and mathematics to real-world applications through a field trip to a local arcade and theme park.
  • In Roller Coasters, students applied engineering concepts to design and model functional roller coaster systems.
  • During the trip to Europe, students explored Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary through guided tours, cultural immersion, and historical study.
  • In Scholar’s Workshop, students strengthened academic skills through focused work in research, writing and independent study.

The result is learning that feels both purposeful and memorable.

Students collaborate across grade levels, work alongside faculty they may not typically learn from, and experience firsthand how knowledge from multiple disciplines connects in the real world. They learn that science can inform environmental stewardship, that mathematics drives engineering, that communication powers leadership, and that creativity has practical applications.

Sage Session also culminates in a community showcase, where families can experience the products, projects, and discoveries students have created over the course of the program. It is a celebration not only of what students have learned, but how they have learned it.

Academic excellence remains at the core of the Sage Ridge experience every day of the year. Sage Session simply offers another way for students to demonstrate it—through exploration, innovation, collaboration, and hands-on discovery.

Because at Sage Ridge, learning is not confined to a single classroom, subject, or approach. It is a dynamic process that challenges students to connect knowledge with action and curiosity with purpose.
