The E.L. Wiegand Student Activity Center was electric on Friday, Dec. 19, as the cherished annual Alumni vs. Students basketball tradition brought together past and present, creating an evening filled with competitive spirit and community pride.

A Night of Friendly Competition
Our varsity girls and boys teams had the unique opportunity to face off in front of a crowd of more than 200 students, parents and friends of Sage Ridge against more than 40 alumni who once wore the same jerseys. The matchups showcased not only the talent and growth of our current student-athletes, but also reminded everyone of the lasting legacy Sage Ridge School’s athletic programs continue to build year after year.
Alumni from graduating classes as far back as 2013 made the trip back, some traveling from across the state, including Florida, Ohio, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and beyond, to reconnect with former teammates, coaches, and the community that shaped their high school experience. The games were filled with highlight plays, plenty of laughter, and the kind of camaraderie that only comes from a shared love of the game and Sage Ridge spirit.
“It was wonderful to connect with alumni, and to hear stories about the impact Sage Ridge has had on their futures in business, finance, law, science and technology,” said Head of School, Dr. Ginger Hovenic.
During halftime, the competition intensified as participants took their shot at glory in the 3-point shooting contest. Spectators cheered as shooters displayed their range and accuracy, with each made basket raising the energy level in the gym. Our very own varsity boys Head Coach, Geoffrey Faries, won the 1st place prize with a total of 15 baskets made in under one minute! The contest added an extra layer of excitement to an already memorable evening.

More Than Just a Game
Beyond the final scores, the Alumni vs. Students basketball tradition serves as a powerful reminder of what our athletic programs represent: community and lasting relationships. Current players gained inspiration from seeing where their dedication to the sport can lead, while alumni, several of whom were introduced to the school’s phenomenal new E.L. Wiegand Student Activity Center, were reminded of the impact Sage Ridge School had on their lives.
Events like these strengthen the bonds between generations of players and reinforce the values of teamwork, perseverance, and school spirit that define our Sage Ridge community. We are grateful to all of the alumni who made the journey back and to everyone who came out to support this special tradition. We can’t wait to see everyone again next year!
