Mock Trial

In Mock Trial, grade 9-12 students role play a trial, acting as various legal professionals and witnesses to learn about the legal process and what a trial may actually look like.  For any student who wants to learn about the law or even just about public speaking, Mock Trial is a great opportunity. Both witnesses and attorneys use acting skills and critical thinking to beat opponents in real courtrooms. Mock Trial begins in the fall and concludes each year with regional and state competitions in February and March.

Speech and Debate

Speech & Debate Team

Contact: John Sloyan
Scorpions have the opportunity to prepare for and compete at local, regional and national tournaments hosted throughout the school year by the National Speech and Debate Association. In this process, students put to use all the skills acquired at Sage Ridge: they research, organize, and present arguments for both sides of important, real-world issues. Students learn quickly how to present themselves with confidence, and they gain the invaluable ability to think on their feet and control their thoughts even as they are being cross-examined. Besides the numerous skills they gain, they also join a unique, cohesive community that values camaraderie and support at the same level it values competition. The Speech and Debate team has a unique flexible structure. Students do not need to commit for the entire year, or even a season, but gain activity credit based on the number of tournaments they choose to attend. Contact Mr. Sloyan for more information.

Junior Classical League (Latin Club)

Contact: Courtney Kiely
The National Junior Classical League (NJCL) is a national organization of middle and high school students who are enrolled in a full-year classics course. At Sage Ridge, this includes Latin and Greek for students in grades 7-12. With over 50,000 members and 1,200 chapters, the NJCL is one of the largest academic youth organizations in the world. Sage Ridge is a chapter of the larger Nevada JCL, along with only three other schools in Nevada. The purpose of the National Junior Classical League, and in extension, the Nevada Junior Classical League, is to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity. JCL includes attending or hosting the State Convention. Sage Ridge School hosted the 2024 Convention.

Theatre

Contact: Anastasia Purvance
Sage Ridge School Theatre Productions annually produces three shows, offering performance and production opportunities for students across grades 1-12.

The fall show is a play chosen from a variety of genres, ranging from historical non-fiction to farcical comedy. Material is advanced and challenging for grade 6-12 student performers, which makes each performance a showstopper! Along with intense direction, students may have the opportunity to design, construct, stage manage, design lighting, and operate sound depending on their role in the production.

In the middle of the year, the Lower School show is an opportunity for grades 1-5, which is directed by Upper School grade 9-12 students to increase leadership skills and build our community. The Lower School play is a fully produced one-act performance that ranges from fairytale stories to shortened versions of contemporary plays.

In the spring, the school produces a Broadway musical featuring students of all grades, abilities, and talents. Spring musicals are carefully selected based on content, songs, and students’ ability. From The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music to Mamma Mia! and Shrek the Musical, styles range from classical to contemporary.

2025-2026 Sage Ridge School Theatrical Lineup

Fall Play: A Night of One Acts

"A Night of One-Acts," featured two hilarious plays, The Ransom of Emily Jane and Nobody Sleeps! Set in the Old West, The Ransom of Emily Jane tells the tale of kidnappers who get more than they bargained for when they hold the rambunctious little Emily Jane Dorset for ransom. In Nobody Sleeps, Spike, a burglar by trade, breaks into the Busby family’s house, where he encounters sixteen-year-old Daisy, her two talkative sisters, and their eccentric novelist mother - and finds that getting out might be more difficult than he’d anticipated.

Lower School Show: Aesop’s Fables

In December, our youngest actors presented Aesop’s Fables, an interactive, fast-moving retelling of four of the timeless storyteller’s most popular fables,‘The Fox and the Crow,’ ‘The Hare and the Tortoise,’ ‘The Donkey in the Lion’s Skin,’ and ‘The Fox and the Sour Grapes.’
